Brand spankin’ new show after skipping last time due to a nasty flu.
Some fun stuff. I played some Residents, who were just in town. I had the opportunity to interview Residents creative director Homer Flynn once again, on Fortunato’s daytime program The Monday Sampler. I’ll have the audio of that once I get my fingers on it; KBOO’s revamping their website, so everything is in disarray at the moment, but in the meantime, listen to the entire program here, with the interview happening at around the half-hour mark.

I also played some Negativland material featuring member Richard Lyons. Negativland‘s Mark Hosler recently informed fans that Richard is very ill, in the terminal stages of cancer and likely won’t be around much longer.

I have always appreciated Lyon’s twisted, almost muted to the point of being subliminal, sense of satire. He brought life to the clueless, desperately wanting to be hip, yet rigidly scriptural Pastor Dick, the similarly oblivious wannabe radio personality Dick Vaughn, and car obsessed media figure Dick Goodbody. Mark once said that Richard was the impetus behind the infamous Helter Stupid media prank gone horribly wrong and was also responsible for a lot of Negativland’s packaging, in addition to songs and vocalizations. Richard was undoubtedly an integral part of the whole that made Negativland’s and Over the Edge’s classic era material so great.

My favorite memory of him was seeing Negativland in 1999 on their True/False tour. My soon-to-be wife Coco was with me and this was our first ever live music event together. I had warned her that this was no conventional music concert but she wanted to go to see why I was so excited about seeing Negativland. She didn’t quite get it. It really wasn’t her kind of thing, these guys mixing up preexisting audio and film on the fly. It wasn’t until Pastor Dick hit the stage that she was nearly in tears with laughter. It was like all of the lame religious indoctrination by obnoxious, pseudo-hip youth pastors she’d had to endure throughout her childhood, as her parents went through their inevitable 70s repentance phase, youth camp trips, etc. She really enjoyed that segment and thought it was really fun and well done.

He made the occasional appearance to OTE in the last few years and had apparently been fighting cancer over the last decade, which had apparently returned. He will be sorely missed.

I hope you like this show.
