Radio Lost and Found for 04/14/16

futurebabypic-01

Brand spankin’ new show after skipping last time due to a nasty flu.
Some fun stuff. I played some Residents, who were just in town. I had the opportunity to interview Residents creative director Homer Flynn once again, on Fortunato’s daytime program The Monday Sampler. I’ll have the audio of that once I get my fingers on it; KBOO’s revamping their website, so everything is in disarray at the moment, but in the meantime, listen to the entire program here, with the interview happening at around the half-hour mark.

I also played some Negativland material featuring member Richard Lyons. Negativland‘s Mark Hosler recently informed fans that Richard is very ill, in the terminal stages of cancer and likely won’t be around much longer.

I have always appreciated Lyon’s twisted, almost muted to the point of being subliminal, sense of satire. He brought life to the clueless, desperately wanting to be hip, yet rigidly scriptural Pastor Dick, the similarly oblivious wannabe radio personality Dick Vaughn, and car obsessed media figure Dick Goodbody. Mark once said that Richard was the impetus behind the infamous Helter Stupid media prank gone horribly wrong and was also responsible for a lot of Negativland’s packaging, in addition to songs and vocalizations. Richard was undoubtedly an integral part of the whole that made Negativland’s and Over the Edge’s classic era material so great.

My favorite memory of him was seeing Negativland in 1999 on their True/False tour. My soon-to-be wife Coco was with me and this was our first ever live music event together. I had warned her that this was no conventional music concert but she wanted to go to see why I was so excited about seeing Negativland. She didn’t quite get it. It really wasn’t her kind of thing, these guys mixing up preexisting audio and film on the fly. It wasn’t until Pastor Dick hit the stage that she was nearly in tears with laughter. It was like all of the lame religious indoctrination by obnoxious, pseudo-hip youth pastors she’d had to endure throughout her childhood, as her parents went through their inevitable 70s repentance phase, youth camp trips, etc. She really enjoyed that segment and thought it was really fun and well done.

He made the occasional appearance to OTE in the last few years and had apparently been fighting cancer over the last decade, which had apparently returned. He will be sorely missed.

I hope you like this show.

Sometimes shows make themselves from circumstances, unfortunately. I hadn’t had much time to prepare a show this week – due to my own circumstances – but this week notes the passing of both local hero Andrew Loomis, drummer for Dead Moon, after a long illness, bringing to a close that chapter of the Fred and Toody saga.

We also lost longtime Tuxedomoon member Bruce Geduldig, who passed away on his 63rd birthday.

I also played a lot of things that were riding around in my radio crate for several months and made crazy radio soup towards the end of the show, but did a not so good job of back-announcing it, but I think the playlist is pretty accurate. I hope you like it.

Radio Lost and Found for 02/25/16

rlf hm4-01

Tonight we’re joined by DJ Jimi Flessas, my pal and fellow veteran of our mutual short-lived stints at KOUG radio – Jimi did an excellent jazz show on Saturday afternoons and Radio Lost and Found’s predecessor Kill Ugly Radio had an approximately one (+/-) year run on this tiny streaming station at Washington State University.

Jimi might be a bigger music fanatic than me. His knowledge of outside Jazz and Funk is nothing short of amazing and his enthusiasm for cool and strange music is inspiring and highly contagious. Two hours flew by like nothing, even though we played some longer tracks and let the mix sprawl out. We both love the music of Bill Laswell, as if you can’t tell from the playlist.

Radio Lost and Found for 02/11/16

I hope you like this show. I made it myself, just for you.

A crazy week for me meant not having a lot of time to work on a show, despite a few really cool records fortuitously falling into my hands lately – namely the notorious If Footmen Tire You.. record, which I played a generous chunk of mixed with other stuff.

Jamilah of Look Who’s Coming To Radio stuck around and shared some incredibly wonderfully horrid finds from YouTube.

I also played a lot of goofy 7″ records that have been traveling with me in my record case for quite a while but hadn’t got around to playing until tonight.

Tonight, we heard some learned a few more phrases in conversational Klingon, heard yet some more David Bowie, said goodbye to Paul Kantner, heard some of Public Image Ltd.‘s Album because it just turned 30, some Blue Oyster Cult for no god damned reason at all, Bill Cosby finally got around to talking to kids about all those drugs, we heard something from Mad Genius and listened to a perhaps legitimate vinyl release of the Tetsuo: The Iron Man soundtrack.
I hope you like(d) it.

Radio Lost and Found for 01/14/16

Here’s my tribute to recently departed rock star. If I’m being oblique in my text, it’s out of consideration of preserving this archived show for posterity. While I usually post a text playlist for all my shows, guessing I get lots of traffic to my archives via people’s Google searches, here this might not be a good idea.

You see, one downside of success and fame is that one also gets latched to a ruthless and relentless business apparatus which seeks out to squeeze pennies out of or maim anyone they perceive as a threat to the continual flow of pennies.
So, with that in mind, the playlist is an image of a playlist, rather than a text playlist.

Maybe I’m being silly and extreme or silly, but that’s why you love me, right?

Anyway, please listen to the show. Contained therein is, I hope, a properly conveyed message of love to recently departed rock star, who was a huge part of my musical tutelage and filled my teenage years with hope and wonder.

Listen
Have it.

La Ruleta for 01/08/16

I subbed for my good friend Alejandro Ceballos, on his program La Ruleta. Alejandro’s show and mine used to be on the same night. I miss hanging out with him. Do check out his show, which is on every 2nd and 4th Friday night on KBOO – it’s amazing!

I played a fair amount of Lemmy related material, some Hawkwind, Motörhead and Sam Gopal, the psychedelic band he was in sometime between roadying for Hendrix and joining Hawkwind. So long, Lemmy and thanks for all your inspired mania.

I also played some great reissues which originally came out on self released cassette (seems to be a trend lately, I’m happy to note); Alan Jefferson’s weirdly peculiar Galactic Nightmare and Emerald Web’s Whispered Visions. They’re available from Trunk Records and Finders Keepers, respectively. Check them out.

Anyway, here’s the show.
